HR interview questions and answers for freshers

You cleared the test and the technical round, and now there is one round left that sounds easy and still makes people nervous: HR. You are rarely asked to write code. They ask about you, your plans and whether you will move cities, and a wrong answer to a simple question can still end it. Freshers ask about it in almost the same words every placement season:

“Tell me a brief information about campus placement, and what questions are asked in HR round?and which books I refer to preparation for campus placement?”

Careers360

Books can list the questions, but the answers have to come from your own life. Below are 20 HR questions freshers are commonly asked, on campus, off campus and at startups, each with what HR is checking and a short sample answer to rebuild with your own facts. For the whole process round by round, read how to crack an interview as a fresher first.

What does the HR round check?

By the time you reach HR, you have usually been through a test or a technical round. HR asks something else. Will you accept the offer, join on the date, go where the project is and still be here after the training the company paid for? Do your answers match your CV and documents? Can you talk calmly in English?

That is why HR questions about relocation or higher studies are not small talk. Training freshers costs a company money, so HR listens closely for signs that you might leave early. Many HR rounds follow a rough order like this one.

How a typical HR round runs
  1. Settle inGreeting, an easy opener, “Introduce yourself”.
  2. About youStrengths, weakness, family, project.
  3. Why usWhy this company, five years, higher studies.
  4. CommitmentRelocation, shifts, bond, salary, documents.
  5. Your turn“Any questions for us?” and next steps.

The order varies, and short rounds may skip a stage.

Here are all 20 questions at a glance, with what each one is testing. The sections below take them one by one.

How should a fresher answer any HR question?

A good HR answer usually has three parts. Answer the question in the first sentence. Give the proof: a short true example from college, an internship, a part-time job or home. Then link it to the job in one line. Most of the time goes on the proof, the part HR cannot hear from the next candidate.

The shape of a good HR answer
Answer20%

One direct sentence. “Yes, I’m open to relocating.”

Proof60%

A short real example with a detail or a number.

Link20%

One line on why it matters for this job.

Shares are a rough guide to how long each part runs. Most answers fit in under a minute.

A US employer survey points the same way. In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2026 spring report on what employers want from graduates, its chief executive Shawn VanDerziel put it simply: “Employers want to see examples.”

Questions about you (1 to 5)

1. “Introduce yourself” or “Tell me about yourself”

What HR checks: whether you can speak for a minute without rambling, and what you choose to lead with.

Sample: “Good morning. I’m Priya. I finished my B.Tech in Computer Science this year with a CGPA of 7.8. In my final year I built a lab booking app with three friends, and I wrote the backend and the database. What I enjoy most is finding out why something broke, which is why I applied for this trainee role. Outside class I ran our coding club’s weekly contests.”

Keep family to one line. The “Tell me about yourself” guide has the full structure and a 30 second version.

2. “What are your strengths?”

What HR checks: that you know yourself, and that you can prove it.

Sample: “I finish what I start, even when it gets boring. Two weeks before our project review, our login kept failing on the college network. I spent three evenings on it, found a session timeout problem and fixed it, and we demoed on time.”

Pick one strength and back it with something you actually did.

3. “What is your weakness?”

What HR checks: honesty, and whether you are doing something about it. They also check that the weakness is not central to the job.

Sample: “I used to keep quiet in group discussions, even when I had an idea. In final year I volunteered to present our seminar and made myself speak first in team meetings. I am still not the loudest person in the room, but I no longer hold ideas back.”

Skip “I’m a perfectionist”. There is a full page on answering the weakness question with more examples.

4. “Tell me about your family background”

What HR checks: mostly that you are relaxed talking about yourself. Sometimes it hints at whether you can relocate.

Sample: “My father teaches at a government school and my mother runs a small tailoring business from home. My younger sister is in class 12. They have always pushed us to study, and they are happy for me to work in another city.”

Three or four sentences is enough. You need not share anything you are not comfortable with.

5. “What do you do in your free time?”

What HR checks: whether you are honest. Whatever you name, a follow-up question comes next.

Sample: “I play cricket with friends on weekends. Lately I’ve been reading about how UPI payments work, because our project touched on it, and I wrote a short blog post explaining it in simple words.”

Say “reading” and expect “What was the last book?”

Questions about the company and your future (6 to 9)

6. “Why do you want to join our company?”

What HR checks: that you looked at them, not just at a list of companies hiring this month.

Sample: “Three reasons. Your fresher training is structured, which matters to me coming straight from college. You do a lot of work for banks, and my project was a small payments app, so I want to see how it is done at scale. And two seniors from my college who joined last year say they moved to client projects soon after training.”

Swap in facts from the company’s own careers page and recent news.

7. “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

What HR checks: ambition that fits staying with them.

Sample: “I’d like to be the person my team asks about one area, whether that is cloud, testing or whatever my first project leans into. I’d also like to have led a small module and be helping new joiners the way I hope seniors will help me.”

An answer that ends with an MBA, your own startup, a government job or moving abroad can sound like you plan to leave early. If that is your real plan, be honest about the timing, as in question 8.

8. “Are you planning higher studies?”

What HR checks: the risk that you leave soon after training.

Sample: “Not in the next few years. I want real work experience first. If I study later, I’d want it to build on the job, for example a part-time certification in the area I end up working in.”

Do not lie, though. If you have already applied for an MS starting this year, say so rather than resign in six months.

9. “Why should we hire you?”

What HR checks: whether you can connect what they need to what you have, with evidence.

Sample: “You need freshers who learn fast and can be trusted with work. I learned React in three weeks for our project and shipped it on time, and in my internship I was given the weekly report after the first month. I’ll bring that to your training.”

There is a whole guide on “Why should we hire you?” with more fresher examples.

Commitment questions: relocation, shifts, bond and salary (10 to 14)

These answers decide whether the offer can work for you at all, so think them through before the call. Large service companies are open about it. An Associate Software Engineer posting on Accenture’s India campus portal asks for “Flexibility to relocate for project deployment to any part of India and work in 24X7 shifts basis business requirement”. On TCS’s NQT hiring page for the 2024 to 2026 batches, applicants pick three preferred job cities: preferences, not promises.

10. “Are you willing to relocate?”

What HR checks: whether they can send you where the project is. Say yes plainly, or state a real constraint once with the reason. Saying yes now and refusing the posting later can cost you the offer anyway.

11. “Are you comfortable with night or rotational shifts?”

What HR checks: fit with clients in other time zones. A health or family reason is better said now than after joining.

12. “Are you okay with the service agreement or bond?”

What HR checks: commitment, and that you stay calm about terms. Some companies attach a service agreement (you pay an amount if you leave before a set period). Ask for the amount, the period and any conditions, and raise a concern calmly if something worries you. Read the offer letter before you sign.

Words for the commitment questions
  • Open to relocatingYes, I’m open to any location. I understand freshers go where the projects are.
  • Relocating, with a real constraintI’m open to relocating. My father has a health condition, so Pune or Hyderabad would help, but I understand the first posting may be elsewhere.
  • Shifts, when you can do themYes, I understand shifts can be part of client work, and I can adjust.
  • Shifts, when you cannotI can manage early or late shifts, but regular night shifts would be hard for a family reason. I’d rather tell you now.
  • The bondI understand there is a service agreement. Could you tell me the period, the amount and the conditions, so I can read it properly before I sign?

13. “What is your expected salary?”

What HR checks: that you are realistic. At large mass recruiters the fresher package is often fixed per role and shared before the drive. TCS’s NQT page, for example, lists its pay by cadre, and adds that internship experience is not counted for salary fitment.

TCS All India NQT hiring for the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches, checked November 2026. Figures change by drive.

Sample (fixed package): “I know the package for this role is ₹3.4 LPA and I’m comfortable with it. At this stage, learning and a good first project matter more to me.” Use the real figure from your own drive.

Sample (no fixed package): “From what I’ve seen for this role in Pune, between 4 and 5 lakh. I’m flexible if the training and the work are right.” Base the range on salary sites for that role and city. Our salary expectations guide covers how to build the range.

14. “Do you have any other offers?”

What HR checks: whether you will actually join.

Sample: “I’ve cleared the test at one other company and I’m waiting for the interview. This role is my first choice because of the training and the banking work, and if I get the offer I’ll take it.”

Say “first choice” only if it is true.

Questions about your record and your project (15 to 16)

15. “Why do you have a backlog, a gap year or low marks?”

What HR checks: honesty, and that the problem is behind you. Eligibility rules on these are strict and checked against documents. TCS’s NQT page says “No pending backlog will be permitted” at the time of the selection process, says gaps must be declared and must not exceed 24 months in total, and says original marksheets are verified at the interview and again at joining. The Accenture posting above asks for no active backlogs and a degree finished in its normal duration.

Sample (backlog): “I had a backlog in Engineering Maths in second year. I was unwell during that exam season. I cleared it in the next attempt and have had none since.”

Sample (gap year): “I took a year after class 12 to prepare for JEE. I didn’t get the rank I wanted, so I joined B.Tech, and that year of maths helped me a lot in first year.”

Two sentences, no blaming, and dates that match your documents.

16. “Tell me about your final year project”

What HR checks: your own part in it, and whether you can explain it to someone who is not an engineer. The technical round tests the code. HR tests the story.

Sample: “We built an app that lets students book free computers in our labs. There were four of us, and I did the database and the booking logic. The hardest part was two students booking the same slot at the same moment, so I made the app hold a slot for a few seconds while someone booked it. About 200 students used it in our last semester.”

Say “we” for the team and “I” for your part. The fresher guide covers how to prepare the project for the technical round.

Behaviour questions (17 to 19)

As a fresher your examples come from projects, fests, sports, internships, part-time work or family duties. All of them count. Use situation, action, result, under a minute.

17. “Tell me about a time you worked in a team”

What HR checks: how you behave when people disagree or do not pull their weight. Teamwork is one of the qualities employers look for most: in NACE’s 2026 survey of 185 mostly US employers, 85% said they look for teamwork skills on a graduate’s resume.

Sample: “For our college fest I handled sponsorship with four others. Two of us wanted big brands and two wanted local shops. I suggested we split the list and try both for a week. Local shops said yes faster, so we moved everyone to them and raised ₹60,000, more than the year before.”

18. “Tell me about a failure”

What HR checks: whether you own it and what changed after.

Sample: “In my first overnight coding contest, our team spent most of the night on design and had nothing working at the end, so we were out in the first round. The next time, I pushed us to get a rough version running in the first few hours and improve it after. That time we reached the final.”

“I have never failed” tells HR you cannot judge your own work.

19. “How do you handle pressure?”

What HR checks: a method, not a slogan like “I work well under pressure”.

Sample: “In sixth semester I had two exams and our project demo in the same four days. I wrote out what was due each day and did the demo first, because three teammates depended on it. I don’t love pressure, but a written list stops me from freezing.”

If you do freeze in the interview itself, the mind went blank guide has the exact words that buy you a few seconds.

The last question (20): “Do you have any questions for us?”

What HR checks: interest, and whether you prepared. “No questions” ends the round on a flat note.

Sample: “What does the training period look like, and how are freshers assigned to projects after it?” Another good one: “What did freshers who did well in their first year have in common?”

Do not open with leave or salary hikes. More ideas in questions to ask the interviewer. After the round, a short thank-you email is worth sending when you have the recruiter’s address.

What should I wear, and how do I handle an online HR round?

Dress. For campus and in-person rounds, a plain formal shirt and trousers, ironed, with formal shoes, is safe; a simple kurta or salwar suit works too. On video, wear the same top half in a plain colour.

Before the call. Test your setup on the app the interview uses, not a different one. Zoom has a test meeting at zoom.us/test for your connection, audio and video. Google Meet has a green room self-check before you join. Teams has a test call under Settings, then Devices, in the desktop app. Put the camera at eye level and face a window or a lamp.

During the call. Join five minutes early with your CV, marksheets and ID within reach and your phone on silent. Look at the camera when you speak. If the network drops, rejoin and say: “Sorry, my connection dropped. Could you repeat the last question?”

For practice. Record yourself answering the 20 questions on your phone, then have a friend ask them in random order on a video call. The free practice tools guide lists options if you have no one to practise with.

What if my English is not good?

HR wants to know a manager and later a client can understand you, not that you sound like a news reader. Short sentences and “Could you repeat the question, please?” take you most of the way. Since these 20 questions are known, practise the first sentence of each answer until it is automatic, then finish in whatever simple words come. Memorised paragraphs break at the first follow-up.

The fresher guide has a one-month plan for improving spoken English before placements, and our page for non-native English speakers covers the live call.

What are the common mistakes in the HR round?

HR rejections often come with no feedback, so check yourself against this list before the round.

Do this

  • Give one true example for every quality you claim
  • Decide relocation, shift and bond answers before the call
  • Keep every date and mark the same as your documents
  • Name something specific about the company
  • Ask one prepared question at the end

Avoid this

  • Recite “hardworking, quick learner, team player”
  • Pause, then say “I’ll manage” about relocation
  • Promise to stay when you already plan to leave soon
  • Criticise your college, faculty or a past interviewer
  • Contradict what you told the technical panel

One more: be very wary of anyone who asks you to pay for a test, training or an offer letter. TCS says on its hiring page that it “does not ask candidates to deposit any money at any stage of the recruitment process”. If someone asks for money, check with the company through its official careers site before you pay anything.

How does PiriPiri AI help in an online HR round?

Preparation is still the main thing. PiriPiri AI fits the live call, when a simple question meets a blank mind: your internship dates, the number from your project.

PiriPiri AI is a desktop app for Apple Silicon Macs and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. During a live call it listens to both sides (your microphone and the interviewer’s audio from your computer), transcribes them, and drafts a short answer on a small floating overlay, built from the CV, job description and role you added. In an HR round that usually means a reminder of your own facts. Press Answer now (Cmd+Shift+Enter on Mac; Windows uses Ctrl in place of Cmd) if a prompt has not appeared, and Mute mic (Cmd+Shift+M) to cough. No meeting bot joins, and it works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex and others. On a Mac, hearing the interviewer needs macOS 14.2 or later. After the call, the transcript and notes are saved to your account, so you can see which questions caught you before the next drive.

The overlay asks the operating system to leave it out of screen capture, so it does not appear when you share your screen or record in the usual way. On Windows 10 (version 2004) and later the window is removed from captures. Developer documentation for this setting notes that some newer Mac capture tools may still pick such windows up, so do a test call with a friend on the exact app you will use before you rely on it.

The limits matter most in an HR round:

  • Many campus HR rounds are in person. There it does nothing.
  • It cannot decide your answers on relocation, shifts, the bond or higher studies. Those are your decisions, and HR will hold you to them.
  • Reading a draft word for word sounds rehearsed, so glance for the fact and answer in your own words.
  • It cannot give you experience you do not have, and HR’s follow-up questions go straight to that.
  • Some employers and some places have rules about recording calls or using AI help in interviews. Check the employer’s rules and the platform’s before you use it, and if a round says no outside help, do not use it there.

The safest use is practice: run it in a mock HR round with a friend, then read the transcript to see where you rambled. There is more on the setup in how to use it and on what interviewers can notice in can interviewers tell if you use AI.

Questions people ask

What questions are asked in the HR round for freshers?

Mostly the same set: introduce yourself, strengths and weakness, why this company, where you see yourself in five years, higher studies plans, relocation, shifts, the service agreement, expected salary, any gap or backlog, your final year project, a teamwork or failure story, and whether you have questions for them. Prepare a short, true answer with one example for each.

How do I introduce myself in an interview as a fresher?

Keep it under a minute: your name, degree and year, one project with the part you did yourself, and one line on why you want this role. Leave family details to a sentence or skip them. HR will ask follow-ups on whatever you mention, so only include what you can talk about.

How long is the HR round for a fresher?

It varies by company. In mass hiring it tends to be short, since the panel sees many candidates that day, while at startups it can be a longer conversation, sometimes with a founder. Ask the recruiter how much time to keep free, and keep each answer to about a minute.

Can I get rejected in the HR round?

Yes. HR rejects candidates who seem unlikely to join or stay, who give answers that do not match their CV or documents, or who hesitate on relocation, shifts or the bond. Some companies also decide only after all rounds, so a weak technical round can show up as a rejection after HR.

Should I tell the truth about my backlog or gap year?

Yes. Large employers check marksheets and dates, and TCS’s own hiring page says gaps must be declared and that candidates whose declared details are discrepant are disqualified. Say what happened in one or two sentences, show what you did about it, and move on.

What should I say if I am asked about marriage plans?

You can keep it short and steer back to work: “Right now I’m focused on building my career.” You are not obliged to discuss your personal life. How a company handles that topic also tells you something about it.

Where to go next

If the interview is soon, read the interview tomorrow guide for the hours you have. For the technical side, see the technical interview page, and for story questions, the behavioural interviews page.

PiriPiri AI costs about $2.50 an interview, paid in one-time packs that never expire, so no subscription is required. Every new account starts with 3 free sessions, so you can try it in a mock interview before a real one. See pricing, prices in India and the refund terms.
